External Frames Of Reference Reviews
In the 90's a lot of people would call this style of music Death Metal. In the here and now it will get branded as metalcore, largely due to Paul Hamblin's raspy vocal delivery. Call it whatever you want to, The Red Death rips!
With riffs that take cues from every style of metal imaginable, solid song arrangements and an overall delivery that is completely monstrous, this band takes on all comers here on 'External Frames Of Reference'. If you had to sum up the sound of this band in one word, it would be scathing, as this quintet deliver tracks at a breakneck pace that are accented by strong melodic guitar harmonies and pummeling rhythms. 'Consciousness Decay' is a winner most definitely, and yes folks, there's even guitar solos here as well! This group knows when to slam it into overdrive and kick things up a notch, as they do on 'Twilight Of The Idols', a track with frantic guitar licks courtesy of Joshua Williammee and Aaron Conti that slays with a voracious intensity. A death metal aura permeates 'Silent Machines' as Hamblin gives us a glimpse of some raw guttural vocals. A classic NWOBHM lick during 'From The Height of a Thousand Years' gets you headbanging and the pinch harmonics during the chorus sound thoroughly wicked! Giant detuned triplets rumble and a tight, kicking beat from drummer Graham Mitchell fuels the fire of 'The Final Sphere', a song filled with timely shifts in tempo that keep the music interesting. A buzzing bass walk anchors 'Aftertaste Of The Emaciated' as Hamblin spits out a frenzy of vocal strikes that could appeal to someone into either hardcore of black metal style rawness. A short instrumental closes this record out with a doomy blast emphasized by a wailing lead break that ends in a wall of distorted fuzz. The Red Death have a bit of everything in their sound and this open-mindedness results in a strong record from start to finish. No doubt, this is a good choice for any listener who desires extreme music with a degree of diversity to it. Overall a very good listen!
